Function of Cardox Safety Heater

 

Cardox blasting is a novel physical blasting technology used primarily in mining, quarrying and cement industries to break up rock, concrete and hard material blockages. Cardox safety heater is the critical component that triggers this series of chemical reactions and physical changes. Function of safety heater in Cardox blasting system is to provide rapid, controlled heat energy to liquid carbon dioxide, causing it to undergo a rapid phase change and transform into high pressure gas.

 

The process is as follow:

 

  1. Electrical initiation. Igniter applies DC voltage to electric resistance wires linked to safety heater.
  2. Resistive heating. When electric current passes through high resistance alloy wire, it will create lots of heat by Joule’s Law, and pass it to heat sensitive chemical powders inside safety heater.
  3. Phase change. When chemical powders reach to certain temperature, decomposition reaction will happen and release massive heat, which is transferred to liquid CO2 stored in Cardox tube. Liquid CO2 is heated and transforms into CO2 gas in less than one second.
  4. Pressure buildup. CO2 volume expands about 600 times of its original and builds pressure up to 300MPa.
  5. Pressure release. High pressure breaks shear disc and releases CO2 gas through directional holes discharge head.
  6. Material dislodgement. Burst of inert CO2 gas blasts and removes surroundings to clear obstruction.

 

Cardox safety heater is actually a chemical energizer, which is activated by electrical impulse and release massive heat for conversion of liquid carbon dioxide to high pressure gas.

 

Components of Cardox Safety Heater

 

Electric resistance wire: As initial source of heat, it is made of alloy wire with high resistance and stability.
Chemical powders: It is featured with heat sensitive, rapid reaction, massive heat release and stable performance.
Cardboard shell: It protects chemical powders from mechanical damage and moisture.

 

Features of Cardox Safety Heater

 

  • Non-explosive. Safety heater is only activator to initiate physical expansion of carbon dioxide, and only be initiated by electric impulse at certain voltage and current. Faulty operation like open fire, impact, friction is difficult to start its chemical reaction.
  • Safe and inert. Inert nature of CO2 means it won’t create secondary reactions.
  • No ignition risk. The refrigeration effect of gas release prevents ignition of air-gas mixtures.
  • High reliability. Heat release and duration of every safety heater should be consistent to make sure phase change happen within one second, so operator can make them blast simultaneously or in sequence when multiple Cardox tubes work together.
  • Environmental friendly. No toxic gas or dust are created during working.
