Steam is widely used for heating process in industrial application. Steam will turn into hot condensate at the same pressure and temperature after releasing huge latent heat, but condensate still contains about 20-30% of its total heat. Reuse and reclaim of condensate is put into operation from both financial and environmental consideration.

 

Benefits of condensate recovery system

 

  • As distilled water, condensate is ideal for use as boiler feedwater. It doesn’t need additional treatment. Un-recovered condensate must be replaced by raw makeup water. Condensate recovery system could reduce water consumption, treatment cost and fuel consumption for heating low temperature water. Flue gas emission is lowered.
  • Flash steam generated at lower pressure is new heat source for heating purpose.
  • Continuous surface blowdown and intermittent bottom blowdown ensure output of high quality steam and safety of boiler. Blowdown times depend on total dissolved solids (TDS) of makeup water. Condensate recovery could greatly reduce blowdown times due to its low TDS, normally less than 20ppm.
  • Without reclaim of hot condensate, more steam will be used for heating of low temperature feedwater. Condensate recovery system could maximize boiler output.
  • Air dissolved in water is related with water temperature. The higher temperature of water, the less of air dissolved in water. Hot condensate could minimize oxygen content in water and reduce pipeline & equipment corrosion.
  • Hot condensate discharge into environment directly is prohibited. Condensate recovery could avoid additional cost caused by cooling process.

 

Problem with condensate recovery

 

  1. Cavitation would happen due to negative pressure at condensate return pump intake, if saturated condensate is pumped directly.
  2. Traditional open system would have excessive dissolved oxygen in water.

Saturation temperature is related with pressure. An ejector is installed before pump intake to boost pressure of condensate. Pressurized condensate will have a higher saturation temperature to avoid cavitation inside pump.

 

Compared with open system, new closed system could not only reduce heat loss caused by flash steam, but also avoid pipeline & equipment corrosion caused by dissolved oxygen.
